Eternal And Fleeting

“I was there at the birth of the high elves themselves, child, and bore witness to the dawn of their great kingdoms. I was there when their golden age faltered, and watched from afar as their civilization crumbled into mere nothingness prior to its current, reformed status. I’ve outlasted each-and-every one of their own ages-long lifespans… and that is but merely the high elves of old. What say, then, do you think I’d expect from such a vaguely-noticeable flicker of life like your own, human?

“As a vampire of the ancients, do you truly imagine yourself at my side, able to not only hold yourself up to my standards, but to also muster enough of a presence that i might recognize any amount of worth from your existence, let alone find you endearing? I expect to outlast many more kingdoms and nations, youth… perhaps even a few additional races as well. Maybe even humankind itself.

“Indeed, you have managed to acquire my attention for this long, enough to voice my concern regarding your expectedly-innocent foolhardy. You see me as exotic, and beautiful, lovely, etcetera. Your praises are frequent, and ever so brash. And now you come to me with a confession of love. I’ve reluctantly endured your dotings, knowing that they wont last forever… but to think you would be so blindly smitten that you would go so far as to imagine yourself as the consort of an immortal.

“Now, now. I do not insult your affections. Rather, i appreciate the sincerity… but i must insist. I fear that such an attempt at a romance would only harm us… and, unlike yourself, i will not eventually experience the embrace of death to quell such a hurt. As for your sake, i could not envision myself conjuring the interest of knowing you, entertaining myself with you… loving you. Perhaps there is a wavering spark of endearment in my soul for you, but i feel it would be best if we didn’t… explore such things.

“…Oh, you are truly a wretched thing, youth. To be so selfish and demanding of me… why must you tempt me so with such unabashed proclamations? You are an eyesore of the heart, to beguile me with such blissful promises of a future that you know will only become ever wistful once enough time has passed. Every cherished moment between us will only become twisted, warped into a forlorn memory. Why must you do this to me?

“I wish to refuse you, and deny myself of your ridiculous proposals. Yet, as selfish as I am, it is… difficult, to so readily refuse you. Not without a hint of dishonesty, to you and to myself. I despise these feelings, i truly do… but i cannot lie to you, i will not lie to you. I have grown complacent, it would seem. To think i would become so careless in my passive tolerance of your daily flatteries that i might stoop so low as to actually… feel for you.

“Please, child… youthful, innocent human. I urge you… i beg of you… please don’t let me fall in love.”

  1. A short and bittersweet quip of a Vampires Melancholic journey through hee near eternal life.

It’s disheartening to see her denying at a chance of love knowing full well the heartache that comes after their lovers demise would supersede even their pride and views on rhe otherwise inferior humans.

Tis a difficult subject with no real good answer. Anyways this was a nice read

  2. Good thing the MGE boosts the guy’s lifespan to match his wife’s or, failing that, has multiple ways of becoming undead.

However, should neither of those things be available… then it would indeed be difficult to bring oneself to love something dearly when the pain of loss is guaranteed. I think the next best solution would be to just accept that outright. Live and love, and when the time comes to see them off instead of mourning their loss you celebrate their life and try and move on sooner rather than later. I once read a story featuring this sort of mental paradigm, where the immortal had each and every one of their lovers immortalized in the form of extravagant paintings in their likeness, and kept on having committed relationships.
