Mors Funebris Finale Part 7 of 8

Scientia Lucrata

<><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><

(Late afternoon/Early evening, 12+ hours since Arawn’s demise)

As motionless as aTerracotta-Warrior, Secundus stood vigil in the foyer outside Mara’s office.

To his front, were the elevator doors on the other side of the hallway.
To his left, at her desk was Ms. Augustine; currently immersed in her Secretarial duties.
To his right, was an empty hallway that led to an adjoining skybridge.
Behind him, past the doors were the FBI agents. They whom, for the last hour had been interviewing the de-facto Director of the Iron foundation- Mara.

In preparation for his interview with them, Secundus had wisely foregone his comfortable Kimono ensemble. As it and his Katana, would’ve elicited more questions from them than he would’ve cared to answer.

Instead, he scavenged one of Arawn’s spare three-piece suit and ties, from his office-bedroom.

“She’s been in there for over an hour.’ Secundus observed. ‘Yet they talked to me for a fraction of that.’ He thought to himself, as he tried to ignore the itchiness of his necktie.

‘She’s lost so much. Her kingdom, Arawn, Boto, and it seems Juanita as well.’ He mused. ‘Now, she fights for the one thing still left to her: Control of the Iron Foundation.’

‘Well, I’ve heard no shouting from within, for the last fifteen minutes.’ He smiled after his eyes darted towards the nearby wall clock, ‘Perhaps they will be done soon.’ He decided.

Shifting his eyes to his left, he became aware that Ms. Augustine was now openly staring at him. For the next minute, he did his best to ignore her scrutiny. But even a statue- has its limits.

“What?” He muttered finally, coldly, as he continued staring straight ahead at the elevator doors.

“OH!” Ms. Augustine jumped, and looked away. “I’m sorry. But it’s been,… awhile since you and I,…” she began. Then she stopped and paused, while she mulled over something appropriate to say. After a moment, she sighed and gave up.

“I miss him.” She whispered, finally. “Of all my Masters? He was the most kind.”

Secundus sighed and forced himself to relax, then he looked over at her.

“Thank you.” He whispered warmly. “I miss him too. But not for the same reason you do.” Secundus sighed. Then he smiled. “Go ahead. Say it.”

“What do you mean?”

“The question you’ve been wishing to ask.”

“I don’t know,…” She began, her eyes darting around nervously.

“Ms. Augustine.” He interrupted her. “I have known you, since the American Civil War. I am also a telepath. Ergo, I am aware that there is a question weighing heavily on your mind.”

“Ask it now. You may never get another chance.” He finished somberly. Ms. Augustine’s face turned crimson with embarrassment.

“Well. I’ve been wishing to know,…” She began hesitantly, “What exactly IS a Not-brother?”  She asked quickly. Secundus turned himself to face her full-on, as he raised an eyebrow. Then he opened his mouth to ask her a question.

“YES!” Ms. Augustine interrupted, before he could ask. “Dr. Iron has explained it to me before. But his answers have always been,….unsatisfying.”

“Ah. So, you’re probably wondering. What is my answer? From my point of view?”

“Yes.” She replied quietly. Secundus nodded good humoredly as he tilted his head, and thought about it. After a minute, he began.

“I guess you could say, that you and I are a lot alike.”

“How do you figure that?”

“In a way, you and I are both Homunculi.”

“What? Are you saying that you were created the same way? As Dr. Dee created me?’

“Not precisely.” Secundus shook his head slightly. “As I understand. You were formed from Dr. Dee’s semen and blood. Correct?” He asked. Ms. Augustine blushed again, and nodded silently.

“I and my fellow not-brothers were formed instead, from Arawn’s Pneuma and Materia Prima.”

“His,…what?” Ms. Augustine blinked in confusion.

“For lack of a better term; his soul and his body.” Secundus stated. “We are all a sort of ‘extension’ to him.”

“I’m aware you’re an extension. But, do you mean that as you continue to live? So does Dr. Iron?”

“In a way, yes. But also no.” he replied, Ms. Augustine frowned.  Secundus noted it.

“Let me ask you this.” He began, “Technically, are you not a part of Dr. Dee? Formed from his body?”

“Well yes.” Ms. Augustine hesitated, and then she smiled. “But also…no. I think I understand what you’re getting at.” She comprehended.

“Yes. You are independent from Dr. Dee. You are your own person now.” He nodded, then his face fell.

“I and my surviving not-brothers, do not have such luxury. That is because our souls are extensions of Arawn’s soul. His personality was a foundation for ours. And now?” Secundus said as he set his face and resumed his guarding pose. “That foundation is gone.”

“Without a foundation. The house will crumble.” She quoted. Secundus nodded curtly in agreement.

“I’m sorry.” She whispered. Secundus bowed his head once, and resumed his silent vigil.

“How are you holding up?” she asked him neutrally as she pointed to his arm.

“I am fine, for now.” He lied quietly, not facing her. She frowned skeptically, but didn’t pursue it.

“Hopefully Mara’s interview, won’t take much longer.” He sighed.

Right then he heard the sound of muffled footsteps approaching from inside Mara’s office. He tensed slightly, as he began to reach for the Katana that wasn’t there at his side.

“Meccha Uzai.” He whispered. ‘That’s right. I left it in Primus’ bedroom.’ He realized as he turned himself around.

‘Mara.’ He decided, when he recognized the sound of her footsteps. That was when both doors opened to reveal her.

As opposed to the disheveled mess she’d been not too long ago; Mara was now dressed in her best professional attire: A black faux-leather long sleeved shirt dress, that matched well with a pair of matching thigh high boots. It was one of her outfits that proclaimed: “I am Boss!’

As he watched, Mara clicked the doors open as she stepped to one side politely, and lifted an arm to allow the following agents egress. As they stepped forward, Secundus stepped aside to get out of their way. He relaxed when he noted that Mara had a relieved smile on her face.

Just as the Agents had almost exited the office, the slightly older one stopped and pulled out a notebook.

“Oh, Director Mara!” Agent Carfax began with an apologetic smile. “I’m sorry, but I just now remembered one final question that I wanted to ask.” He said expectantly. The smile on her face froze as she slowly turned her eyes at him.

“As I recall,” He continued smoothly, ignoring Mara’s look. “Dr. Sulaymen’s account of Dr. Iron’s death, appears to be rather thin on details.” Agent Carfax stated facilely as he peered at his notebook.
“Since you were there, I don’t suppose you’d have anything further to add?” he asked her demurely.  Mara frowned slightly with here nostrils flaring, before she noticed that Secundus and Ms. Augustine were nearby.

She gave them both a quick warning glance. They both got the message- ‘Keep quiet’. Both nodded discreetly.

Seeing it, Mara quietly turned back to Agent Carfax, and gave him a patient sigh.

“Hasn’t he already sighed Dr. Iron’s death certificate?” Mara deflected. Agent Carfax frowned and nodded once.

“Then I’m afraid that I can’t give you any more details Agent. I’m not a trained medical professional. Like he is.” She countered.

“Yes, I understand that, acting-Director.” Agent Carfax nodded amiably. “But I’m just trying to get some clarification.” He said off-handedly.

“Clarification of what precisely?” Mara asked resignedly. Carfax smiled and continued.

“According to his report, Dr. Iron died as a result of ‘incineration’.”

“Yes?” Mara replied neutrally.

“But you see, that’s the interesting part. Incineration from what, exactly? Our crime scene investigators couldn’t find any trace of accelerants, near were Dr. Iron allegedly died.” He quizzed. Mara’s frown deepened as she lifted her chin. Carfax stared expectantly at her.

“Additionally, according to your morgue pathologists. They don’t have any of his remains. Not so much as a charred bone. Don’t you find that to be,…well,… odd?”

“I wasn’t aware that I’m supposed to be a funerary director.” Mara replied as she crossed her arms resentfully. “All I know is, that Dr. Iron died in a furious display of lights before me.” She stated coolly.

“Have you tried asking the attending paramedics for those ‘clarification’? Though I imagine, that they’ll give you the same details that Horus, Secundus, and I did.”

“We already have.” Agent Mulder piped up. “They corroborate the circumstances of his demise.”

“Then why are you asking me, again?” she emphasized. Both Agents shared a frustrated look. Agent Carfax sighed and grimaced. Then he continued.

“There are many details about this case, that are not adding up.” He grumbled, as he walked across the hallway and pushed the ‘summon’ elevator button. It lit up when he pressed.

“Then I suggest you attend the Press Conference; That I’m already overdue to give.” Mara shot back.

“Trust me. We will.” Carfax replied coldly. Just then, the elevator ‘dinged’ it’s arrival. He stepped forward into the empty space. At which point Agent Mulder stopped in front of Mara and stared challengingly at her. She met his gaze and stared back.

After several seconds of silence, she broke it first.

“Is there something you wish to say Agent?” she inquired.

“Speaking off the record,…” he began as he glanced once towards his partner. Carfax huffed and looked away. Mulder smiled slightly and turned back to Mara.

“You’re hiding something.” He stated assuredly. “Something big, something wondrously strange. I don’t know what that something is. But I intend to find it.” Mulder stated defiantly. Then Mara did something that caught him completely off guard.

“Good.” Mara replied with a warm smile. “I hope you find it; whatever it is you’re looking for. Now, if you will please excuse me?” She finished dismissively, as she turned around and faced Secundus.

“Yes.” Agent Carfax replied in frustration. “Thank you for your time Director. We’ll be in touch.” He said firmly, mostly to his fellow agent.  But Mulder refused to give up.

“The Truth Is Out There!” he shouted at Mara’s back. Mara tensed, then she slowly turned her head and glared at him.

“Yes, it is Agent Mulder.” She replied sweetly. “But keep in mind, one thing. That here are more things in heaven and earth, Horatio, than are dreamt of in your philosophy.” She grinned.

“Hamlet.” Mulder shot back immediately, then he licked his lips nervously.

He opened his mouth to reply again, but that was when Agent Carfax’s hand clasped Mulder firmly by the shoulder, and forcibly jerked him into the elevator All there watched, as Carfax began to berate Mulder intensely as the elevator doors closed on the pair.

Mara snapped her eyes over to stare at Ms. Augustine.

“Is the Press ready?” She demanded coldly.

“Yes Ma’am.” Ms. Augustine nodded once, “They are already inside the conference room, and waiting for your statement.”

“Good.” Mara replied in a steely tone. “Did you receive the Beta-tape?”

“Yes. It’s ready for the presentation.” Ms. Augustine replied.

“Then let us proceed to the Conference room. Now.” Mara said coldly, as she performed a quick turn and began marching down the hallway.

Both Secundus and Ms. Augustine hurried to catch up, as they silently followed her through the halls. Then down some stairs to the appropriate floor.

Normally, Mara would’ve said something, anything during such a walk. But this time, not once did she look back to see if either of her entourage were keeping up.

Just as Mara reached for the Conference room door handle, was when Secundus dared to ask her something.

“Mara.” Secundus whispered. She stopped and turned her head slightly in his direction.

“Those pair of Agents. They were a pain, weren’t they?” he asked, as an embarrassed blush crossed his face.

“I wouldn’t say that.” Mara tossed back over her shoulder.

“Why?” Secundus asked, confused.

“I’m sure that they’ll make a fine pair of husbands.” She speculated.

“Really?”

“Indeed.” Mara paused. “For someone else.” She growled.

“Mara, are you all right?” Secundus asked, concerned.

Mara didn’t reply, as she inhaled deeply. Then, she turned herself to face him full on. Secundus gulped at the intensity of her eyes boring into his.

“I’m sorry, I don’t know what else to say right now.” He admitted. Mara stared coolly back at him for several seconds. Then she began to speak.

“In the last few hours, I’ve lost Arawn, Boto, and it seems Juanita as well.” She breathed. “So, no.” she said simply. “I’m not ‘all right’.” She stated as she stared dispassionately at him.

“But then. How I’m doing? Isn’t really relevant right now.”  she shot back quietly. After waiting for a couple more seconds for him to respond, she raised a hand and turned to go.

“Is it?” she finished tersely.

“No, I suppose not.” Secundus said sheepishly. “You do realize, we could put off this conference.” He offered. Mara paused, and just for a second. She almost smiled.

“Arawn taught me a long time ago.” She began, “That the sooner you get an onerous task over with, the better.”

“I suppose so.” Secundus admitted.

“Do you have any other questions?” Mara asked.

“Yes, I do. Mostly about Cue.” He asked. ‘Oops.’ He thought when he saw her frown intensify and regretted asking. She licked her lips thoughtfully before replying.

“I’ll answer every one of those questions, Secundus. After the press conference is over.” She promised as she opened the door and stepped inside. Secundus and Ms. Augustine immediately followed her in.

As soon as they entered the conference room stage, numerous flashes of light erupted in the audience- akin to a swarm of fireflies in the night.

As the trio came to a halt in front of the stage table, many of the reporters there, started shouting out questions. Each trying to have their question answered first.

“YOU’RE NOT IRON! WHERE IS HE?”, shouted one particularly bombastic reporter, not at Mara, but at Secundus instead.

Secundus stopped and stared back at him. He was a tall lanky individual, with a mop of curly hair down to his waist.

‘Ask her! Not me!’ Secundus wanted to shout back, as he stole a glance at Mara. ‘She’s getting frustrated.’ He noted when he saw her clenching her hands tightly. ‘Time to intervene.’ He decided.

Taking the initiative, he raised a hand to get the audience’s attention. Once he got it, he then turned his head in Mara’s direction and pointed silently at her.  When he did, every reporter present started directing their questions to her.

‘Thank you Secundus. (M)’ Mara thought at him. He grimaced in response.

Standing tall in front of the stage podium, Mara calmly raised her hands up for silence. After several seconds, the general hubbub died down. She reached out, and picked up the podium microphone, and poised it in front of her mouth.

“Doctor Iron.” She began, “Is not available at this time.” she stated, but was interrupted by another surge of questions. Instead of reacting, she chose to keep her demeanor passive. After half a minute, the questions slowly ebbed and then came to a halt. With one exception.

“Who the hell are you?” Shouted that bombastic reporter once more. Mara shifted her eyes to take him in.

“Who asks?” she demanded quietly.

““George Newman, U-62!” he identified defiantly. “The Iron Foundation has got a lot to answer for!” He bombasted. Mara locked her eyes with him as he stared defiantly back.

‘Hmmm.’ Mara judged. ‘This weird one going to be a tough nut. Sissy!’ She commanded. ‘Guilt him!’ she ordered her corrupted Guardian Angel.

Within a few seconds, Mr. Newman’s triumphant smile, began to falter as he tried to stare Mara down. He swallowed once nervously, then he began sweating bullets.

‘Man. This hot chick is really weirding me out!’ He thought to himself. After a couple of seconds more, he blinked and looked away first. Mara stared at him for several seconds more. Then she turned her attention to the audience with just a hint of a smirk.

“Now,” she continued, as she picked up the microphone in one hand and stepped to one side of the podium. She then motioned for Ms. Augustine and Secundus to sit. They did.

“You’re wondering- Who am I?”

“Well, my name is Mara Lillitu Maou.” She stated crisply. “Why am I here? I am the current acting Director of the Iron Foundation.” A number of gasps could be heard in the audience.

“I know what you want- to have your questions answered. They will be, AFTER I make my statement.” She said sternly, as she stared around the hall. Even then, a couple more reporters tried to ask a question. Yet even they couldn’t maintain eye contact for long, as the intensity of Mara’s stare proved stronger than their resolve.

“Now, to my right is Iron’s Secretary,” she nodded to her right, “Ms. Augustine.” She paused momentarily, and watched as Ms. Augustine nodded her head once.

“To my left.” Mara continued, as she nodded to Secundus, “Is a close relative of Dr. Iron, Nikkio ‘Secundus’ Iron.” She nodded.

“Several hours ago. On this very morning, of July 32,1988. It was asserted by News Channel 54.” Mara paused. “That the Iron Foundation’s Security Forces, were engaged in a firefight with some still unidentified civilians.” Mara stopped and stared over the crowd of expectant reporters. The air was tense with expectation.

“I’m here to inform you, that their assertion.” Mara began.

“Was correct.” She finished.

Immediately there were numerous looks of surprise. Then an avalanche of shouted questions erupted from all of the news crews, and reporters present. Both Secundus and Ms. Augustine shared a quick look. Each noted that the other, looked surprised by her statement.

Mara refused to answer, and maintained her best poker face until they’d all quieted down. Once they had, she frowned.

“Now, as to the current whereabouts of Doctor Iron? I regret that I have to inform everyone here, that he is dead. I’m afraid that he has lost his life, in that very selfsame fire fight as reported by News 54.” Mara closed her eyes and bowed her head.

“He will be missed.” She whispered, then she lifted her head.

“A memorial service for Dr. Iron and his accomplishments, will be announced shortly. After we’ve made arrangements for an appropriate time and venue.”

“Now more importantly, you are all wondering WHY did the Foundation engage in such egregious behavior. Yes?” She asked. No one dared to make a sound.

“I will explain.” She stated. But then she got a thoughtful look on her face.

“But I will not attempt to excuse it.” She added. Then she moved back behind the podium and replaced the microphone back into its holder.

“To begin. All of you are well aware, that the Iron Foundation has for decades supported the World Health Organization, in their Global outreach in the Emergency Medical Mission field.”

“We have worked alongside not only them, but also The Red Cross, The Red Crescent, Amnesty International, Doctors without Borders, and other similar organizations. We did so in manifold ways, including our own medical services for the less fortunate.”

“But what has made the Iron Foundation stand out from everyone else. Has been our,…Ahem!” She cleared her throat.

“What some would say,” Mara raised her hands and ‘air quoted’. “overly-judicious use of security forces.” She breathed.

“We began doing so, in order to protect our Medical personnel from those who would seek to exploit them, and the resources in their care. We chose to protect not only our people, but our patients as well. After all, taking hostages for ransom, has been a ‘tradition’,” Mara sneered. “by the less than ethical, here on this world for countless generations.”

“Now, years later, as a result of our ‘Protect-Our-Own’, strategy, Medical Hostage taking has reached an all-time low. Unsurprisingly, our strategy has also earned us no small number of enemies.”

“In one particular case, we earned the enmity of that terrorist known as Grendel. He being that individual who organized that attack on this complex last year.” Mara reminded them with a grimace. A murmur arose amongst the reporters then. Mara waited for a second then continued.

“Naturally, we in the Foundation fully support the FBI, the NSA, and all other law enforcement organizations; who are dedicated to the defense of the United States, and its citizens.” Mara paused again, as she took in the sight of the pair of FBI agents at the back of the conference room. She almost smiled when they both nodded back at her.

“However, we also have to face a grim reality. That those organizations have their hands full, so to speak, when it comes to dealing with the U.S.’s numerous enemies.”

“We are aware that Grendel doesn’t rank high in their most wanted list. So, taking our own initiative, we hired no small number of outside investigators, to try and track down Grendel’s location.”

“A few days ago, we received some positive news. Finally, we had successfully located him and his organization. Strangely enough, he was based here in Los Angeles, at the abandoned Piper bubble-gum factory.”

“Naturally, Dr. Iron’s first instinct was to alert the relevant authorities, and hand over all pertinent information, for them to deal with.”

“Unfortunately, that was also the time in which the Phone Book Killer began his rampage. I was there when Dr. Iron was informed by the higher authorities, that their priority was to focus on tracking that remarkable individual down.”

“Needless to say, Iron was not pleased. But he was understanding of the situation, and the circumstances. And there, the matter probably would’ve remained static.” Mara stopped and swallowed.

“Unfortunately, it did not.” Mara hissed angrily. She closed her eyes and inhaled deeply, as if calming herself. She opened her eyes suddenly.

“Late yesterday afternoon, the Iron Foundation was infiltrated once more. Which resulted in a number of our personnel being attacked. One of ours was badly injured, and another was killed. Also, I’m sad to say, one of our children was taken hostage.” Mara hesitated as another wave of muttering and whispering began again. She pressed on.

“Who was that one child?” Mara asked rhetorically as she lifted her head and stared chillingly across the room. “None other, than my adopted daughter, Boto.”

At that point, every reporter present jumped to their feet and started shouting questions once more. Mara didn’t reply, other than to take a remote that Ms. Augustine handed to her. Mara activated it, which turned on a large set of TV screens located along one wall.

After a few seconds, a video began to play and the numerous reporters calmed down enough to turn their video cameras at it.

“This is a visual record of what happened next.” Mara informed them all.

<><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><

“Joel? Who is that?” Demanded Dr. Iron to a man dressed in a military jumpsuit. To all those who watched the video, each instantly recognized him as Joel. He was pointing to a third man.

All eyes then turned to the male he was facing. He was a lean man with a day’s growth of beard, and he was dressed casually in blue jeans and a t-shirt. There was a cardboard box under one of his arms

“His name is Earl, and he checks out.” Said ‘Joel’.  “And that, is safe.” He said as he nodded at the package.

“What kind of house of horrors did I walk into?!” Earl began as he looked around nervously. “Look folks, I don’t know what all this is about! But I’m just doing what the G-man told me to do.”

“G-Man?” Iron demanded.

“Uh,…Grendel.” Earl answered cautiously. This reply which caused a minor whispering with the hall’s reporters. Earl’s face paled as he visibly gulped.

“What does he want?” Iron growled.

“He said he wants a parley.” Earl answered, his eyes shifting fearfully.

“What for?!” Someone else on the video snarled, for some reason this individual was pixelated. A number of reporters glanced questioningly at Mara, then they returned their attention back to the screens.

Earl cowered when he looked at the pixelated person. It took him a second, but he managed to get his courage up after licking his lips.

“He wants an armistice.” Earl said quickly.

“Why should we agree?!” Iron and the pixelated person demanded in unison.

“He said I was to show you this.” Earl stated, as he made a demonstration of slowly opening up his cardboard box. Then he began carefully pulling out a teapot. The video Mara, gasped in shock at the sight of it.

“Boto!” she cried. “Her favorite teapot.” She stuttered as her eyes focused on the pot. Then she turned her attention to Earl.

“How did you get this?” she said quietly, dangerously. She took a step forward towards Earl. But that was when the camera focused on Earl. He blanched at the sight of her, then he backed up a step.

“I know how.” Joel interjected, as he interposed himself between Mara and the newcomer. “Parley Mara! He has Safe-Conduct.” He told her sternly. It took the better part of a minute, but eventually she backed down. But her eyes continued to blaze hotly.

“Who’s Boto?” Earl asked.

“Her daughter.” Iron informed him as he gestured to Mara.

“Ah shit.” Earl complained. “I’m not getting out of here alive, am I?”

“You will.” Iron assured him. “I guarantee it.”

“Yeah, right pal.” Earl shot back skeptically, as he kept shifting his attention around the room.

“Joel, what is your report?” Iron demanded. Joel looked embarrassed as he began.

“I’ve double-checked. She’s gone missing.” He began, a frustrated frown on his face. “The door to Mara’s apartments has been broken into, and her room is in disarray. For what it’s worth, since there’s not blood, I think she went quietly with her kidnapper.”

“Kidnapper?” Mara demanded. “Any idea who?”

“Yes, her kidnapper appears to have been one of the (static surge) According to reports, one of them was ‘playing possum’. It broke free (static surge) and made a bee-line to Boto.” Joel explained. “Two Hunters tried to intercept it when it broke free. One of them is now in the infirmary.”

“The other?” Iron asked. Joel’s grimaced and looked away, his nostrils flaring.

“Ah.” Iron said as he closed his eyes in evident fury.

“Excuse me!” Earl half-shouted as he waved an arm to get attention. “I was also told that I needed to report back. To give them your decision.”

“Why should we care about that?” A woman hissed.

“Because if I don’t make that call. Then my own family will get ‘whacked’.” Earl shot back.

“That sounds like Grendel.” An unseen woman’s voice muttered.

“Then you will make that phone call. But we all will need to discuss it first.” Dr. Iron replied.

“Look Pal, I’m short on time here! I have to make that call within,..” Earl said as he checked his wrist watch. “Ten minutes.”

“Then what?” Iron grimaced.

“If you willing to parley, they’ll give me the time and place.”

The video feed jumped ahead several seconds.

“Go! Make your phone call.” Mara ordered Earl. “Tell him that we will parley.”

<><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><

At that point the video came to an end. All was quiet as every reporter returned their attention to Mara. She didn’t leave them hanging for long.

“I accompanied Doctor Iron to the parley spot. As we expected, it turned out to be a Trap. He and I were both captured and imprisoned. Naturally, our Security forces did their best to find a way to free us without bloodshed. Unfortunately, Grendel’s forces had other ideas. Which finally brings us, to the footage all of you have witnessed on Channel 54.”

“Unfortunately, before they could affect our release, Dr. Iron was shot in the chest by one of our captors. He did so, in an effort to shield me from one of our assailants.”

“As a result of his sacrifice, Dr. Iron passed away nine hours ago.” At that point, Mara’s steely exterior broke momentarily, she let out a small gasp and bowed her head, as she clutched at the microphone tightly with both hands.

“He died the way he lived.” She stated with a slight stammer, her jaws clenched tightly. “Putting the needs of others first.”

All was silent as Mara’s nostrils flared when she breathed in deeply through her nose. Then she lifted her head up and forced herself to open her eyes. Eyes that all there could see. were now threatening to overflow with her tears.

She licked her lips and unclenched her hands from the microphone, and began to speak once more.

“Additionally,” she continued flatly, “As it turned out, one of the other deaths? Was my daughter. Boto.” She finished quietly and breathed in deeply for several more breaths.

“I believe that now, is the time for me to begin answering your questions.” Mara stated, with just the slightest quiver in her voice.  In the stunned silence that followed, no one spoke. But, eventually one reporter dared. After that, the questions flowed like an avalanche.

Mara, Ms. Augustine, and Secundus, did their level best to answer them all as best they could.

It took them a while.

<><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><

After the press conference had ended. Mara stood with Secundus and Ms. Augustine outside the entrance.

“Mara? Would you please accompany me to the Vaults?” Secundus demanded urgently, before Ms. Augustine could speak. She glared daggers at him.

“Mara? The matter between us needs to be settled, soonest.” She stated as she looked at Mara significantly.

“Ah yes!” Mara said immediately. She turned to Secundus and asked, “Would you give us a moment please?”

“Make it several.” Ms. Augustine suggested, not looking at him. “Shall we meet at your office, please?” She asked Mara.

“All right.” Mara replied, giving her an annoyed look. She returned her attention to Secundus, “Why don’t you go ahead down to the Vault?  I’ll catch up as soon as I can.” Mara said sweetly. “Please?” she said to him before he could object.

“Very well then.” He replied, but before he could leave, Mara leaned over and gave a him quick peck on the cheek.

“What was that for?” he asked as he touched the spot where she had kissed him, feeling both slightly surprised and slightly indignant.

“No reason.” She shot back with a sad smile, then she followed after Ms. Augustine. Going his own path, Secundus shook his head in consternation.

After the pair made their way in silence to ‘her’ office, Mara came to a halt and stood utterly still in the middle of the room, and looked around at the now cleaned up and reorganized space. Ms. Augustine stood patiently over near Arawn’s…

“No! Strike that!’ she reminded herself, ‘MY desk.’ She reproved herself.

“You wished to discuss the terms of your employment?” Mara asked, taking the initiative.

“Indeed, I do.” Ms. Augustine stated quietly, mostly to herself.

“I have to ask. Do you miss him?” Mara asked.

“Yes, I do.” Ms. Augustine replied, crestfallen. “Like I do, with all of my former employers.” She replied mysteriously.

“So, what is it we need to discuss? Your salary? Your perks, your privileges?”

“No, none of that. I will accept anything you dole out to me.”

“Then I don’t understand your need for urgency.” Mara stated, confused.

“I will speak plainly then.” Ms. Augustine said as she uncrossed her arms and looked directly at Mara. “I desire a change.”

“Of what?”

“My form, and my method of collecting sustenance.”

“I don’t get you.” Mara said, still confused. Ms. Augustine held up a hand.

“This form,” Ms. Augustine began as she made a show of her hands indicating her body, “is tiresome to me.”

“And?”

“You are aware that I am a Homunculus. Yes?” she asked. Mara nodded.

“Then you might be aware that my form, is whatever my employer chooses.”

“I think I remember Arawn mentioning something like that.” Mara paused, “So I would get to choose your next form then?”

“Correct.”

“Oh. What would you like to appear as?”

“Something more desirably feminine than this.” Ms. Augustine said as he pointed to herself again. “I would prefer something more akin to your own Succubus form.”

“Why that?”

“Because of the method of collection for my Sustenance.” She continued, Mara opened her mouth to ask, but Ms. Augustine interrupted her first. “Like you, I need a regular dosage of Spirit-Energy. I need it, in order for me to act at optimum capacity.”

“Wait!” Mara said, surprised. “Are you telling me, that you and Arawn have had sex?!” she said, utterly surprised. “Oh, my Mom! I had no idea.”

“Actually, no.” Ms. Augustine stated, shaking her head sadly. “Doctor Iron insisted on delivering me my quota, in a most celibate way.” She finished ruefully. She then huffed once.

“Why didn’t you seek other employment?”

“Because I am loyal to a ‘T’.” Ms. Augustine replied. “Once I am employed, I remain loyal, until either my employer dismisses me, or they die. However, I did try to get him to give me the quota in other, more pleasurable ways. Unfortunately, he was adamant about ‘staying true’ to his Lady-Love.”

“That sounds like him.” Mara nodded sadly. ‘I really could use an orgasm right now.’ She judged. Then she moved her eyes to take Ms. Augustine more fully. “So, what is the best way for me to ‘transfer’ your quota?” She asked hesitantly.

“My preference? Is oral.” Ms. Augustine stated, matter of fact. She then moved forward till she was within arm’s reach of Mara. Which elicited a pleased smile from her.

“Up until Iron, I have totaled up several hundred years’ experience in both Cunnilingus, and Fellatio.”

“However, as your Secretary.” She continued, “I will obey whatever strictures you place upon me.” She said neutrally.

“Why don’t we discuss what kind of form you desire, after your first payment?” Mara smiled as she sat herself onto ‘HER’ desk and leaned back to tug up her faux-leather skirt.

“That is acceptable.” Ms. Augustine said, returning her smile, as she kneeled down in front of Mara.

<><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><

“Sorry. I was delayed.” Mara said in a rush, as she approached Secundus outside the Vault’s entrance door.

“The usual paperwork?” Secundus winced sympathetically once.

“Not exactly.” Mara said vaguely, as she gestured at the open Vault door. “Ms. Augustine’s terms of employment, actually.”

“Ah!” Secundus said archly, his smile widening. “That explains your delay then.” He grinned. Mara stopped and stared quizzically at him.

“Oh.” She exclaimed. “I get it now, that’s what you meant. When you said that I needed to ‘get it from her own lips’?” she asked archly.

“Quite so.” He nodded enthusiastically. “Let me just say that even though Primus wanted to stay true to Takana. The rest of us not-brothers, held a different opinion.”

“What?” Mara replied and then giggled. “So that means you,…?” she began.

“Yes, many, many times.” He smiled back. “And that is all that I will say on the matter.” He stated firmly. “Follow me please, Boss.” He insisted as he entered the Vault. Mara followed.

“So, what’s the significance of it?” Mara stated once the pair of them had located Arawn’s Silver Shield. To Mara’s eyes, it was just a round shield about a meter in width, along with the standard 8 arrows expanding out/Symbol of Chaos.

“Allow me to demonstrate.” Secundus said as he stepped forward and placed his palm upon the center of the symbol. He frowned for a second in concentration.

“Observe.” He stated as he snatched his hand back quickly. As he did the Shield separated into two halves, front and back, with a dull subsonic ‘klunk’ that resonated within Mara’s core.

Then both halves counter-rotated a full 360 degrees, all the while making a sound akin to a giant millstone grinding away. Once the rotation stopped, the two halves snapped together smartly.

Mara blinked in surprise when a stone archway appeared out of nowhere in front of her. The silver shield, being the arche’s capstone.

Without further ado, Secundus pressed a palm against the grayish blue stone ‘door’ and gave it a small push. It opened silently.

“After you Boss.” Secundus smiled and bowed, indicating to Mara that she should take the first step. At first, she was hesitant, but then she shook herself and stepped through. Inside, she took several paces through a dark tunnel and was utterly surprised at what lay beyond.

“Oh, my Goodness!” she said in shock and surprise. She then hurried several steps further and marveled at the garden in which she found herself walking.

All around her were a number of strange flowering plants, hanging from a vast variety of trellises. All of which lined the path through the footstone gardens in which they walked. Each flower had a different form, and many of them had more than one color.

In amongst the flowers flew a plethora of strange insects and other avian creatures. Not all of which had feathers. Additionally, some had an odd number of wings.

“What the?” Mara gasped delightfully, as one furry/scaly denizen came up and hovered itself in front of her face for a moment. After inspecting her for a second, it buzzed off.

“What was that?”

“A Humming-zoog.” Secundus stated.

“A what?” she exclaimed. “I’ve never heard of that before!”

“I’m not surprised.” Secundus smiled at he looked up and over at everything that lay around them. “The majority of these creatures, are alien to Earth.”

“What is this place?” She said in wonder as she turned herself around to take it all in.

“It’s a pocket realm, similar to the Queen of Hearts.” He began. “This place is a portion of a world’s Dream-Lands.”

“Which world?” she asked, surprised.

“I’ve no idea.” He sighed.

“Is this what you wanted to show me?”

“No. This,” he said as he made a horizontal circling motion with a fore finger, “is just the meditation garden.”

“What I need to show you, is further on.” He stated as he continued walking, Mara couldn’t help but be enchanted, as she stared wide-eyed at all of the delightful flora and fauna that surrounded her.

After a second’s hesitation, she followed after him. The sound of her business shoes made a silent scuffing sound, as she progressed through the foliage. Soon they both came out into a clearing.

Mara came to a stumbling halt as she felt her eyes widen, and her mouth drop open in astonishment at what lay before her.

“What is that?!” she exclaimed as she pointed ahead.

“Xiom’s Castle.” Secundus began as he patiently waited for Mara to take it all in. “I remember when I first saw it too. It is quite the sight,…” he began.

“I’ve seen it before.” She whispered, as she scanned the worn walls, their crenellations, and turrets.

“What?” Secundus said in surprise, baffled. “How? Iron has no memory of showing you this place.” He said as he turned to her fully.

“I’ve seen it before. In the Land Between.”

“Between? Between what?”

“Life and Death.” Mara squeaked fearfully, as she reluctantly pulled her eyes from the edifice. “Can you recall Arawn’s recent memories? From when he went in with Boto to retrieve me?” She asked.  Secundus frowned and placed his fingertips along both temples. After a second, he jerked in shock as his eyes went wide.

“Great Maker!” He yelped in surprise. “You are correct. This cannot be a coincidence.” He stated as he viewed the castle with newer eyes. Then, he pressed his lips together and offered her his arm.

“Please allow me to show you something.” he stated. Mara hesitantly accepted, and wrapped his arm in hers. He began walking slowly, carefully. Mara swallowed again, and reluctantly allowed herself to be led.

They entered the castle through a raised portcullis, and then passed into the main chamber. Instead of stone walls and floors like what she expected, all about them were a number of dark-wooden walls with rectangular white panels.

“I’ve seen those.” Mara muttered.

“If this were in Japan, these would be known as ‘Shoji-screens’.” He said as he pointed a finger onto one of the white panels and pressed into it hard. After a second, he pulled his finger away. A small indentation appeared where he had his fingertip, and then it slowly reformed into its normal flatness.

“Though these, are far more durable.” He admired.

“So, what was it you wanted to show me?”

“This way!” he said as he let go of her arm and motioned with a hand.

“All these around you?” He began, as he started walking down a hallway of the ‘Shoji’, “are our personal apartments.”

“Our?” Mara asked.

“Our.” Secundus nodded. “All of Primus’s not-brothers; Mine, Tertius’, Quartus’, Quintus’, and of course, Primus’.

“Just those?” she asked, as she looked about. “They all look the same.”

“No, but one of these is Xiom’s.”

“Who is that?”

“A goddess that Primus had, for an on-again/off-again lover.”

“Wow!” Mara smiled, “I’m learning so much about him today!” she said, and then frowned for a second.

“Wait! A Goddess?” Mara asked, as they came a halt. Before them stood another doorway. Unlike the other door Shoji-screens, this large wooden one, had what appeared to be a Yin-Yang symbol on the surface But, as opposed to two lobes, this one had three.

Overhead on the screen door’s lintel, were marked some runes.

“What does that say?” she asked, pointing to them.

“Quae Mortua Iacet Aeterna”. Secundus intoned as he read it aloud. “That which is not dead, can eternal lie,…”

“And through strange aeons, even death may die.” Mara finished for him. Secundus gaped.

“I am surprised, few are aware of the full phrase.”

“It was one of the few things my mother taught me, that stuck.” She smiled ruefully. “So, who was Xiom?”

“She, was a Chaotic Goddess of Death and Renewal.”

“She was a Chaos Lord?”

“No. Chaotic. Not Chaos; she was in a class all her own.” He sighed, “and this, is her apartment.”

“What’s inside?” Mara fretted.

“I’ve no idea.” He replied, “Not even Primus knew. Xiom and he, always had their assignations in another part of the castle.”

“So why are you showing me this?”

“Please place your hand on the symbol in front of you.” He sighed, as he placed one of his, on one of the black lobes.

“All right.” She said warily, as she placed her palm upon an adjoining lobe. She instantly regretted it.

As soon as her hand made contact with the symbol. She felt a rush of power surge in the air around them both. Then, she became ‘aware’ of a presence that felt,… overwhelming.

Mara gasped as she began to realize just how ‘big’ that presence was.

‘It’s a like a giant….No!’ she quavered, ‘A mountain!’ she thought as she started darting her eyes back and forth. Mara tried to pull her hand away from the symbol, but she discovered that it and her hand, were now seemingly sealed together.

‘It’s aware of me.’ She thought, as she fought her mounting fear. She quailed when she ‘realized’, that the mountain’s ‘eyes’ shifted and focused on her. Then it seemed to stare deep into her soul.

Mara did her best to keep from crying out. But after several seconds her fear turned into a wave of terror, she began to pant.

‘Its mind is overwhelming!’ she cried. ‘I’m drowning!’ Then, the mountain paused in its inspection, and laughed once.

‘It’s amused?’ she gaped. Then it returned to its perusal. After several more seconds of searching deep within her. Mara got the idea that the mountain ‘nodded’ with satisfaction, then it returned its attention to something else.

Mara got a glimpse of what that something else was,….but she had no frame of reference in which to describe it.

“What the hell.” She muttered, as her hand fell away from the symbol. She then snatched her hand back and cradled it.

“It stings!” She growled angrily over at Secundus. “You bastar,…” She began, but that was when she noticed that he too was cradling his hand. He was sweating profusely, and his skin was the palest she’d ever seen it.

“Are you all right?” She asked him tenderly, forgetting her own discomfort. After a second or two of panting, Secundus opened his own eyes and focused on her.

“No.” he said simply, then he began to convulse. Mara reached out to steady him. After a second, he got himself under control.

“Secundus. You’re scaring me.” She fretted. He stared back at her nervously momentarily, then he frowned.

‘Follow me.” He instructed as he began walking rapidly down the hallway.

“Hey!” she shouted, “Tell me what’s going on!” She demanded as she began to hurry after him.

“Be proud Mara.” Secundus said as he staggered slightly, when he went around a corner. “You’ve been judged, and accepted.” He panted heavily.

“What is that supposed to mean?” She continued as she finally caught up to him.

“I’ve just transferred ownership of this Castle, Xiom’s castle, to you.”

“So?” she replied, “I don’t feel any different.”

“What it means, is that you should now have full access to the Castle and everything within it.” Secundus stated, as he came to a halt in front of one of the identical Shoji-screen doors.

As he continued to pant, he leaned against the frame. “Who knows? Maybe you’ll even access to Xiom’s apartments as well.”

“All right. Whatever.” Mara said dismissively. “What’s this place?” she asked. Secundus panting began slowing, then he replied.

“Primus’s apartment.” He said as his breathing normalized. “See if you can open it.”

“All right.” Mara replied warily as she pushed at the screen door, it slid open without making a sound. She stepped in and looked around the room. There was a bed roll, a pillow, a couple of small wardrobes, and some cushions.

“It looks sparse.” She remarked. “His personal apartments in the Foundation have more stuff in them.”

“Looks are deceiving.” Secundus remarked, as he entered and began counting the screen rectangles. He focused on one of them, then he tapped at it with all of the fingers on one hand. Instantly it ‘clicked’, then a four-square rectangle swung out to expose a cavity in the wall.

“One of many such safes, in this room.” He explained, as he reached in and pulled out a medium sized tome. He looked thoughtfully at the cover for a moment, then handed it to her.

“What’s this?” She asked, as she gingerly took ahold of it.

“One of numerous spell books. This one contains some of Primus’ more powerful sorcery. Like everything else here, it now becomes your responsibility. Guard it well.”

Mara looked curiously at him, then she opened the cover and casually examined the first spell.

Secundus kept a neutral expression as he watched her. At first her eyes jerked slightly, as she studied each word and gesture-explanation. Then at one point her eyes stopped, then they went wide in realization.

She reread what she’d gone over. Then she gasped loudly as she snapped the book shut with a smart ‘snap’.

“Are you kidding me?!” she begged. Secundus noted that her already alabasterine skin, managed to pale even more. Somehow.

“That was a spell to make a Star explode.” She muttered in disbelief. Without saying a word, Secundus gently took the tome away from Mara’s unresisting grasp, and returned it to its wall niche. As he did, she noted that there were several other books, and scrolls, in there alongside it.

“You now have a bigger burden, than what you expected.” Secundus said regretfully. “For what it’s worth, I’m sorry.”

“Yeah.” Mara gulped, feeling utterly overwhelmed.

<><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><

After getting her composure back, she and Secundus walked in silence until they were both emerged from the Shield’s confines.

Mara followed Secundus until he stopped in front of the Sidrat. To Mara’s eyes it looked much different from when she’d seen it last.

Then, it had been pretty much been a non-descript green box the size of a trash dumpster. Now, it appeared more akin to a conglomeration of many other materials. Some organic, some mechanical. Still other parts, she couldn’t quite make sense of.

Only its characteristic internal hum gave away its true identity.

“I guess I should give you a heads up.” Secundus began as he touch-activated the craft’s access. After the panel opened, he remained where he was and looked over at her. “Quintus was marooned in a 37th century Rastafarian penal colony. It changed him.” He warned her as he began stepping inside. Mara stopped him by grabbing ahold of his arm. He turned and raised an eyebrow.

“A Rastafarian penal colony?” She puzzled. “I thought you said to Arawn, that all of you ended up in Japan?” She asked.

“We did.” Secundus shot back, then ducked inside.

‘What?’ Mara thought, perplexed as she followed him.

Inside, she stopped and goggled at the change in the interior. Where before there was just a central column, now there were a half dozen control panels surrounding it. Along with a mish-mash of electronic parts, panels, and wiring: both copper and glassine.

Everywhere Mara looked, there were still more agglomerations of alien technology and pieces of trash piled all over.

“Well, PUSSYCLAAT!” shouted a voice. Mara’s long pointed ears quivered, when she turned to see who it was.

He stepped out from in-between a pair of open panels that were festooned with wires, and endless random flashing lights.

“Hello,….” She replied hesitantly. Then she recognized him. “,…Quintus?” She gaped. Where Arawn had all been prim and proper in his appearance, Quintus was now almost a polar opposite.

He’d let his hair grow long, and had at some point in the past knotted them into rather aromatic dreadlocks. A set of locks that now tangled themselves all the way down to his knees.

She swallowed in disgust at the sight of his ‘dress’, a set of ratty stained pajamas. Looking at him closer, she noticed that he had a weird form of cigarette clutched tightly between two of his fingers.

As she watched, he casually put the ‘cigarette’ up to his lips and sucked hard at it. Small embers at its other end flared when he did. After a second of holding onto his breath, he expelled it all in one fell swoop.

“Don ‘Hello Quintus’, me! Raasclat succubus!” Quintus snarled, as he waved his cigarette around in the air. It was at that point that Mara’s eyes began to water at its scent. Unfortunately, she couldn’t tell if it was the smoke or his body odor that assailed her nose more.

‘Both’. She decided as she winced and then coughed once.

“Smoking isn’t allowed,..” ‘on foundation grounds,’ she began. But Quintus interrupted.

“So rhaatid what if it be? What ya gonna do? Fire me?” he shouted derisively. Then he made a point of inhaling deeply on his cigarette once more. “If ya don care, then hash it out wit Denis Leary.” He growled as he exhaled, straight at her.

Mara bit her lip, and managed to bite off her next reply. “Where’s Quartus?” she asked him instead.

“I be doin fine.” He grimaced, “Tanks for asks.”

“Quintus.” Mara rasped, through clenched teeth.

“Bumba missed him.” Quintus jeered. “Discorporated hour agone!” Quintus shot back as he sneaked a peek at his unadorned wrist. He then closed his eyes, and let his arms drop to his sides. Frowning mightily, he gave off a brief sob.

“He me oldest.” He muttered in a small voice.

“I’m sorry.” Mara apologized in a small voice. Quintus’ face froze and then he slowly opened one of his eyes and peered back at her.

“Yah, I guess you be.” He admitted, as he flung the cigarette away with a flip of his fingers. He then covered his face with his hands and heaved a great sigh, then he mumbled an incantation. Mara felt her skin prickle momentarily.

“All right,” Quintus uttered in a clear tone after he dropped his hands. “We have a mission to complete.” He stated wearily, as he stepped forward and began rummaging around in a large tool box that floated in the air.

“Where is it? Where is it?” he muttered over and over. As he did, he pulled out various odd-looking tools and inspected each one visually or olfactorily. Once or twice, he licked the item as well. Then he pulled out what appeared to be a clear conical device.

“What the feldercarb is a Swedish Salt-Shaker, doing in here?” he groused disdainfully as he tossed it over his back. Mara noted that it hit the deck with a large clunking noise. Then it began to make a whirring sound. Quintus ignored it.

“Ah!” He sighed in triumph. “Here we go!” he smiled for the first time as he lifted up a tubular canister. Through the transparent cover, Mara saw three rocks sliding around inside it. He then turned and handed it to her.

“What is this, and what am I supposed to do with it?” she asked, confused.

“Oh yeah, that’s right!” Quintus stated as he slapped himself on the forehead. “We’re winging this as we go.” He remarked.

“Those.” He began, “are the three source stones from your world. The yellowish one is from your world’s Omphalos. I assume you know what that is?”

“More or less.” Mara replied.

“Good.” Quintus grunted. “The reddish one is from Gruthraith, the far end of the Gateway’s anchor point. The grey one is a chip from a block of your mother’s castle in Royal Makai.”

“All three combined! Will not make Captain Planet.” He paused and smiled at some private joke. He looked expectantly at her for a moment, then he huffed when she didn’t react.

“They are meant to act as the seed of corruption; that will allow your mother, to ‘alter’, this planet’s Omphalos, to her desire.”  He fumed. “After one of you two, places it on the center stone in same.”

“What happens after that?”

“After that?” Quintus said as he screwed up his face. “Then you, young lady.” He began as he waved his finger in Mara’s face. She did her best to not bite it.

“Will contact your mother. Tell her, that all is finally at readiness here. Then, coordinate the times we both do our respective parts.”

“Which are?” Mara asked.

“Oh! You didn’t tell her?” Quintus challenged Secundus. He shook his head and didn’t reply.

“What?!” she demanded as she shifted her attention between the pair of not-brothers.

“Heh!” Quintus laughed once. “Your mother will activate Donnie’s Pocket Atomic, then send it through the Gateway on her side. And we, will send the Sidrat,…” Quintus said as he waved his hands to indicate everything around them all.

“Through the Gateway on this end. The two will meet in the middle, and according to my calculations. They’ll meet and annihilate each other. Which will then stabilize the Gateway between both worlds. Then we get to go out for ice cream.” He laughed sardonically when he finished.

“So, what’s the big deal?” Mara asked suspiciously. Quintus grinned, and gave Mara a look.

“Someone has to pilot the Sidrat.” He said as he tried to suck in another drag from his cigarette. Then he pouted when he realized that he’d thrown it away. He started looking wildly around for it. “Keep it on course.” He muttered.

“You mean,…” Mara began, horrified.

“Yah me, mon.” Quintus shot back, as he began to backslide. Then he sighed.

“I’m sorry.” Mara apologized again, as she touched her lips with her fingers.

“Don be.” He remarked. “We knew this be happening, from beginning.”

“But still,…” She continued.

“Blow Wow!” He interrupted. “Off you go. Chop! Chop! Palli! Palli! Time be wastes!”

“Quintus.” She tried again, still feeling abashed.

“Don take long! Other whose! Secundus be doin it!” Quintus said as he turned himself away from the pair and pointedly began examining his arms.

Mara started to say more, but stopped when she felt Secundus hand on her shoulder. He gently squeezed it, and she quelled her protests.

“All right.” She whispered regretfully.

<><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><

Twenty minutes later, far underground. Near where Mara first met Boto, Secundus led Mara around a corner in one of the maintenance tunnels.

“Hey!” she shouted as she came to a halt. Secundus stopped and looked back at her. “I don’t remember that being here before!” she exclaimed as she pointed to a large opening he stood in front of.

“Perhaps you overlooked it.” He winked.

“Absolutely not!” Mara growled. “I spent weeks scouring these tunnels looking for Boto!” she huffed, “I know them like the back of my hand, and this was NOT here before!” she insisted.

“It was,” he began, spreading his hands. “But you weren’t allowed to see it.”

“Not allowed?!” She raged indignantly, “What’s that supposed to mean?”

“Exactly that.” He replied mysteriously. “The Omphalos of every world, can only be located by a Male Majin.”

“Really?” Mara exclaimed, “Then explain my mother and how she cast her spell to usurp the Chief God; doing it from myworld’s Omphalos.” Mara pointed out.

“She could so.” Secundus replied. “Only AFTER your incipient father located it for her.”

“You’re forgetting something. My father isn’t a Majin.” She pointed out.

“No, he isn’t,” Secundus admitted, “He’s a Hero. A great one. And as far as the Omphalos is concerned, it’s the equivalent of a Majin.” He explained as he entered the entrance to the unforeseen tunnel. Mara sniffed disagreeably as she followed him inside. As soon as she entered the walls shifted from poured concrete, into an ancient limestone cavern.

After a few steps, the Annwyfn not-brother and the Lilim found their way into a vast chamber.

The first thing that struck Mara, was the ambient light. It appeared to be a bluish ozone like affair, with a soft focus that obscured many details.

Then her eyes focused on a column of queer-unlight that pierced down from somewhere far above. It illuminated a waist high stone dolmen in the center of the cavern surrounded by four columns. Casting her eyes around the chamber,  she noted that there were a number of dripstone stalagmites and flowstone columns cluttering the floor.

‘woah!’ she thought, when she noticed that many of the columns had formed into the spaces between the paving stones upon which she stood.

“It’s ancient.” She remarked.

“Older than life itself. On this world at least.” Secundus remarked absentmindedly, as he approached the center column of unlight. Mara found her hand reaching out to touch it.

“Don’t!” Secundus warned as he lifted a hand to block hers. “Don’t let that,…light touch you. Not unless you want to be transported to a Dungeon Dimension.” He explained. Mara retracted her hand.

“What’s that light for?” she asked, curious.

“That is supposed to guard the one item that can destroy this world.”

“There’s nothing there.’ She pointed out.

“Indeed.” He nodded, “That’s because Primus was able to extract it.”

“So where is it now?”

“It’s been incorporated into the Extremus gun.”

“What?” Mara replied, shocked. “Are you saying the Extremus gun is able to destroy this world?”

“Honestly? I don’t know, now. Maybe, maybe not. That ability to destroy anything and everything in this world; is the reason why he crafted that firearm.” He explained. “To transduce it.”

“So that light here?” Mara began as she indicated it, “I assume that it was supposed to protect the artifact?”

“Indeed.”

“So, is that why I’m feeling a pressure pushing against me?”

“Partially, yes. But also, because we’re both aliens to this world. What we’re experiencing is a ‘push-back’ from the protection dweomer. So, let’s not tarry too long here. Otherwise, it could damage us.” He finished, as he pulled out the canister and set it on the floor.

Once it was there, he opened it and teased out the three stones into the palm of his hand. He frowned as he concentrated on the trinity of stones, and then after a second more, he began to chant an incantation.

“Fuyō suru.” He muttered at the end. Immediately, all three stones tumbled softly up into the air. Secundus then spread his fingers of both hands, around the gently twirling rocks. At which they stopped rising.

He pulled his hands slowly apart, and simultaneously the three rocks imitated them. After a second, the trio of rocks started orbiting around an unseen center.

Both carefully, and deftly, Secundus approached the unlight and quickly maneuvered both himself and the rocks, until the ‘center’ of their orbit was the unlight column.

“All right, here comes the hard part.” He instructed. “We only get one shot at this.” He muttered. Mara saw that he was sweating then.

“Empty yourself out.” Secundus whispered to himself, as he kept his arms lifted up and out, shoulder width apart. Mara held her breath.

“Keiyaku suru!” Secundus said suddenly, and as he did, he brought both of his hands together in one flowing motion. In concert with his hands, the stones orbit contracted until they all entered the unlight column at the same moment.

The column of unlight shuddered once, and then it began to pulse with a wave rising from the dolmen.

‘Whom!,…’Whom!…Whom!’ it went, as Mara felt it in her core.

Peering inside the column, Mara noted that the three rocks continued their orbit unimpeded.

“That’s it. We’re done here.” He panted as he began walking to the exiting corridor.

“What’s going on?” Mara asked.

“The pulsing? That’s the protective barrier trying to eject the stones.”

“Will it?”

“Eventually yes. But until it does, it has left the Omphalos vulnerable to outside influence. Thus, the three stones presence, has commenced the corruption of this world.”

“All right, remind me. What is an Omphalos again?” she asked as she followed him out the entrance.

“The Navel of the World.” He began to explain over his shoulder. “Every habitable world has one. It’s the relic of its birthing from another, ‘mother’ world.”

“Has this Omphalos, always been under Los Angeles?”

“No, it migrates.” Secundus shook his head.” It’s been elsewhere. Such as Delphi, Jerusalem, Mak’kah, and a few other spots.”

“So, what is its significance?”

“They who can control the Omphalos. Can control the world.” He intoned from memory. “Humans are limited. They only care to control their fellow humans.” He smirked. “Your Mother wants everything else too.”

<><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><

Finally, the pair of them reentered the Vault, just as they did. Secundus came to a halt.

“Oh no!” he barked in shock, as he stopped and stared at the Sidrat. As both he and Mara watched, several swirling vortices of multi-colored embers exited the cracks of the time-device. Each of them then began to seek an egress from the vault.

“Damn.” Secundus muttered. “We’re too late.”

He then began to run.

“Wait up!” Mara shouted as she found herself hard pressed to keep up with him. Within a couple of more seconds, both Mara and Secundus found themselves standing inside the Sidrat.

“Good bye Quintus.” Secundus muttered, as he picked up the smoldering remains of Quintus’ strange cigarette from the floor. “Damn.” He said fearfully and then he swallowed. “It’s up to me now.”

“Will you be staying here?” Mara asked, as she placed a comforting hand on his shoulder.

“No, I need to go and retrieve my sword. It has some residual life-force left inside it.” He paused. “Hopefully it’ll be enough to keep me going long enough.” He sighed. Then he turned his head to her.

“You should go ahead and have your conversation with your Mother. You can confront her finally.”

“I’ll do that.” She growled resentfully at him. “She would never have done, what you accused her of.” She retorted.

<><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><

A short time later, Mara relaxed herself at her office desk. Even so, she still frowned down at the erotic Silver Chalice sitting on the desktop before her. Secundus had chosen to rest nearby in one of the other chairs across from her.

When she peered closely at the figures that were embossed on chalice’s surface. She was perplexed when she felt her stomach turn slightly at what they were doing. As opposed to the usual excitement such antics elicited in her.

‘Great.’ She sighed as she closed her eyes and leaned back in her chair. ‘This won’t do. I’ve got to think naughty thoughts to activate this.’ She remembered.

“Juanita.” She whispered as she remembered her last bout with her Latina subbie. Yet even as she felt the stirring of her loins, she still felt a bit of trepidation at Juanita’s absence.

Right then, was when she noticed that the Chalice had begun to glow slightly. Flicking her eyes up quickly, she judged its luminance.

‘Not enough.’ She decided.

‘Arawn.’ She tried again as she thought of all of the things, she had wanted to do with him. In response, she felt her nipples pressing hard against the fabric of her blouse. Whereupon the ambient light in the room became almost uncomfortable, as her eyes began to dilate.

‘Better.’ She smiled, then her thoughts and eyes shifted to the one who was sitting before her. ‘Secundus?’ she blinked in surprise when she felt her libido surge.

She was about to say something, but that was when the Chalice’s luminance flared brightly, almost causing her to break her concentration.

In her mind’s eye, another person loomed large before her. Unlike Secundus or Arawn, this one was female. It was someone she’d thought she known for the longest time, but it was only now that she was beginning to realize that she maybe, she hadn’t.

“Hello Mother.” Mara said aloud, as she and the Great Maou’s full mental contact clicked into phase.

“Oh, what’s this?” The Great Maou exclaimed, surprised.

“Mara? What are you doing on this line?” she smirked. Before Mara could answer. The Great Maou continued, “I assume “HE” is teaching you how to contact me? You’re doing well!” She complimented. “Now run along, and let the adults have a conversation.”

“That won’t be happening, Mother.” Mara frowned.

“Oh? A surreptitious call then?” The Great Maou sighed dramatically. “All right. What do you want?” Her mother grunted patiently. “Some bauble or a plaything, that that world doesn’t offer, perhaps?”

“Make it quick!” Her mother instructed curtly. “I’ve got important things to attend to here.” She huffed.

“That’s enough Mother.” Mara growled, “I’m just here to let you know, that all is in readiness on this side.”

“What!? What are you talking about?” The Great Maou demanded testily.

“The Gateway, Mother,” Mara reminded her. “We’re ready here. We’re ready to initiate the Final Programme phase.”

“Really!?” The Great Maou’s luxurious eyebrows shot up in surprise. “That’s excellent news!” she smiled as her eyes began to smolder with lust. “What time should we coordinate?” she demanded eagerly.

Mara shifted her eyes to Secundus and looked significantly at him. He caught that look.

“Three Ay Em.” He mouthed. Mara shifted her eyes to the wall clock.

“Three in the morning,” Mara began, “In about six hours, our time.”

“Good! All will be in readiness on this side.” The Great Maou replied. “I’ve been looking forward to this, for a very long time.” She grinned fiercely.

“Now, I can finally achieve my Apotheosis!” She breathed as she closed her eyes languidly. “I shall triumph over that bitch, the Chief God,…!”

“First, there’s something else.” Mara interrupted, and smiled at her Mother’s sudden annoyed look.

“What?” The Great Maou shot back, irritably.

“My demands.” Mara continued.

“What are you talking about!? Enough of this foolishness! Put Arawn,…”

“DON’T!” Mara shouted then, her eyes blazing, her teeth flashing angrily. “Don’t you DARE say his name aloud in my presence! Ever again!” she yelled as she leaned forward. “You’re not worthy!” she seethed, her whole body shaking with indignation. Then she forced herself to stop and calm down.

The Great Maou gaped in astonishment at Mara’s outburst. Within a second or two, she relaxed her features and gave her an indulgent smile.

“He’s dead then.” She stated.

“Yes.” Mara affirmed.

“That makes sense.” She opined.

“What do you mean?” Mara blurted.

“His erstwhile lover, that Shoggoth. What was her name again?” The Great Maou asked nonchalantly.

“Takana.” Mara growled.

“That’s it!” The Great Maou nodded. “She died rather suddenly yesterday. Reports were, that she called out ‘his’ name and screamed in despair. Then she dissolved herself. I thought it rather auspicious.” She smirked. Mara almost gaped in surprise at her Mother’s callousness. But she recalled Arawn’s training, and managed to keep her features neutral.

“Very well then.” The Great Maou huffed. “What are your demands?” she snorted with a roll of her eyes. “I suppose you want your old kingdom back? Fine, you can have it.” She smirked. Mara repressed a smile.

“No Mother.” Mara deadpanned. “I’m about to give you a world. I want more than one measly little kingdom. I want control over this world.”

“WHAT?! Are you out of your mind?!” The Great Maou shouted indignantly, her eyes blazing red hot. “I have no intention of handing over the power I’ve gained as the Great Maou,…” she began.

“I don’t want to be Maou!” Mara interrupted.

“Then what do you want?!”

“Machiavellian power! To be the power behind the throne. I want the right to choose which kingdom here, will go to whomever I choose.”

“Why would I agree to this?”

“Because I’ve learned from my mistake.” Mara testified. The Great Maou snorted skeptically.

“Yes, I believe I have Mother. If anything, else, I will be able to prevent the kind of screwups that I managed to accomplish. Back when all I wanted to do, was have a party.” Mara finished. The Great Maou blinked in surprise and let her jaw fall open in astonishment.

“I’m impressed.” The Great Maou said. “You are capable of learning after all.” Mara felt a surge of accomplishment. Then what her mother said next, chilled her. “If he was still alive, I would tell him he was correct to keep you alive.”

“So, it’s true then.” Mara said instantly. The Great Maou locked her eyes with Mara.

“I assumed he had told you by now.”

“No, but I just found out.” Mara felt herself beginning to shake with outrage. “How could you? I am your own flesh and blood!”

“Your neglect cost me dearly!” The Great Maou exploded.

“What?” Mara demanded. “How? I can easily repay you now for,…” She began.

“No!” Her mother interrupted. “I’m not referring to the resources it took to reacquire your kingdom! I’m talking about perception!” the Great Maou shot back hotly.

“What do you mean?” Mara demanded.

“Perception is everything.” The Great Maou instructed. “Surely HE taught you about that?” she demanded.

‘Control the narrative.’ Mara realized as a chill shot up her spine. Her mother continued.

“Many in the Order were heartened to discover they could ‘take back’, what they had lost. The name of your kingdom has become a rallying call for them. As a result, the Order and I are now at a stalemate!”

“Well, I guess that means that you shouldn’t be whining about your past failures, Mother.” Mara jibed. The Great Maou’s eyes flared again. Mara smiled and pressed on.

“Instead, you should be taking me seriously. You need me Mother. Now, more than ever.” Mara said triumphantly.

The Great Maou gritted her teeth in preparation to snarl at her. Instead, she closed her mouth and stared daggers at Mara. After several seconds, the Great Maou’s angry look transformed into a grudging smile.

“He’s taught you well.” The Great Maou complimented, a wry look on her face.

“Thank you.” Mara replied. “Besides, this world is damaged. It will need careful management if it is to last long.”

“What do you mean?” Her mother asked, perplexed.

“This world’s civilization has had a recent change known as, The Industrial Revolution. It initiated a potential disaster called- Global Warming. Right now, this world is on the verge of a tipping point. It will need level headed management, if it is to remain habitable for future generations of Mamono.”

“How do I know you’re speaking the truth?”

“Good question. What evidence would satisfy you?” Mara shot back. The Great Maou pursed her lips and stared at Mara again.

‘A staring contest Mother? I’ll win.’ Mara thought. Finally, her Mother was the first to blink.

“Very well then. I bow to your knowledge, and I accede to your demand.”

“DemandS.” Mara emphasized.

“What else?” The Great Maou huffed with a roll of her eyes.

“Historical editing. You will not remove the Iron Foundation from the new history. I will remain in charge, as it’s a good vantage point. Now, more importantly? Keep any and all of your future machinations to yourself.” Mara continued. To her surprise. Her mother didn’t react badly.

“As you wish.” The Great Maou purred “In fact, after my Ascension, I guarantee you will never see me on the Face of the Earth again. Fair enough?”

“Yes.”

“Will that be all?”

“I believe so, I can’t think of anything else.” Mara admitted.

“Then I guess we have a deal?”

“Yes, I guess we do.”

“So, Mote it be.” The Great Maou stated archly.

“So, Mote it be.” Mara agreed, finalizing the deal.

“Au Revoir Mara.” Her mother smiled as she broke the connection.

Mara leaned back in her chair, feeling utterly satisfied.

‘But why do I get the feeling I overlooked something?’ she wondered.
