Light in the Darkness

Orphaned at the age of 11, Feihuo transitioned through the remainder of her childhood in the home of the Toriyama family as one of their own. Now, ten years later, she has decided to seek out the source of her little brother’s nightmares…

This story was written for the Mouse Girl contest, and also serves as a prequel story in my series, Darkness Prevails, and takes place approximately ten years before the events of Eyes in the Dark. It, like my other contest entry (Uncertain Hearts) was written without any outside proofreading, in the interest of fairness. It may read rougher than my others as a result.

As this story is a prequel, it can be read out of sequence of the other stories. A followup sequel is planned as well.  Enjoy!

Uncertain Hearts

Istandrine. A chilly, dark, dreary land full of whispers, superstition, and hushed secrets, sequestered in forested hills and rife with ancient, dubious intent. Not normally the sort of place one wants to visit, for business or pleasure. But for Comtesse Vanisa de Gwynn, a Satyros who doesn’t truly know what she wants from life, maybe it’s the perfect place?

Desert Jewel

The future looks rather bleak for Samira, a slave girl in the desert of the Southlands. She’s prayed to the Goddess for years for some kind of respite from her life, but maybe she’s been praying to the wrong goddess?

This story is part of my original MGE setting, Darkness Prevails. (Click its tag for the others.) It is the fourth entry of the series, but can safely be read out of sequence of the others.  Enjoy!

Forced Freedom

Major Ashlynn Daray, Hero of the Crimson Wing Brigade unit: Aeria Gloris — “Heavenly Glory,” has managed to make her way back to base, sequestered within Royal Ravalia, a kingdom neighboring Lescatié, narrowly escaping capture at the hands of the ruthless mamono of Darkhaven.

… Except something feels missing. Wrong, somehow. Did she truly escape unscathed?

This story takes place in my original setting created for “Eyes in the Dark” and “Electrickery,” and was written as a speed-writing challenge with EighthSpan. The goal was to choose a subject matter for the other person and write what was given. I chose Inari, and was assigned Ropers. The Roper has not received much love, so I aimed to change that. I wrote this story in about 3 days, not including editing/proofreading. The goal was to keep the story at or under 20k words, which I failed miserably, coming in at over 31k. Oh, well. Better luck next time. Enjoy!

Electrickery

So, apparently there’s a new source of power newly discovered. Or something. Cutting edge.

Yeah, what a crock.

This story is the second installment of my original setting, Darkness Prevails.
I suggest reading the first one, Eyes in the Dark, first, as there are spoilers here for that story.

Eyes in the Dark

It’s an average day for Gnat, a servant in his late teens, working for a baron with a modest holding to the southeast of the Western Front. One day, he’s asked to deliver a serving of bread and water to a prisoner in the dungeon.

Unbeknownst to him, today was the day his life would truly begin.
