“Here on the Chaos, Upper Left, Board for each player there are ten Servitors also known as Shoggoth. They serve as the boards Pawns. Two Mind Flayers as Rooks, two Night Gaunts as Knights, two Mi-Go as Priests, and two Yith as Merchants. Finally, we have one Cthulhu as King and one Cthylla as Queen.”

“Wait!” said Yasu with a triumphant smile. “If the Shoggoth are referred to as servitors then this set must be truly old.”

“You are correct Yasu. This one fact alone gives us an indication of just how truly ancient this set is.”

Satisfied the others were gone, Yuki turned to me.

“Hanta- you seem to have a unique talent for angering my sister.”

“Yuki, I-”

Whatever I had to say, Yuki wasn’t quite ready to listen.

“You know what serpents do with sneaky little rats, don’t you?” she scowls.

Her miko’s top managed to slip a little further open.

“Well….at this point I’m hoping that it’s something that involves hand-holding and possibly other outward displays of affection.” I say.

She scowls a little.

“We wrap our bodies around those sneaky little rats nice and tight so that they have nowhere to go.” she says, coiling her lower body around me before gently running her fingers through my hair.

“Then…we cut off the air.” her hands were on the back of my head, gently guiding towards her ample bosom.

“For the record, turns out ‘bedding other youkai’ is a sport I wasn’t particularly good at.” I pout meekly with my face mere inches of the beautiful serpent girl’s bust.

“That’s it. Your are going to get such a smothering, my little sneaky rat!”

“I leave for not even one afternoon and I come back to find that my temple is being used for unsanctioned orgies!” Lady Hisui snarls angrily at the three of us. Yukihebi, Korigashi and myself are kneeling before the irate dragon in a small room that more or less served as her temple’s administrative offices.

Part of me was wondering if there was such a thing as sanctioned orgies at this temple, but given the Ryu’s current temperament, this certainly wasn’t the time to ask.

“As for you…” she glared at Korigashi. “Give me one good reason why I shouldn’t call the town guard right now and have you thrown into jail.”

Korigashi could only look away sullenly.

“Lady Hisui…..I take full responsibility for what happened. Both Miss Yukihebi and Koragashi were under the influence of the liliraune nectar. Neither one would be in that position if I had followed through on my outstanding obligations with the Danuki. Whatever punishment you might have in mind for Yuki, I implore you to be lenient with her…”

The Ryu glowered at me and then Koragashi. It was enough to freeze my blood.

“You- I never want to see you set foot in this temple again.” she almost roared

“She did WHAT!?” I blurted out, my hand belatedly flying out to cover my mouth after I realized how loud I was. Conduct unbecoming of a guest at the Ryu’s temple.

Lady Hisui was genuinely amused, cupping her fingers to her chin as she demurely giggled.

“Shimo congratulated Yuki before she left….” the Ryu said, before sipping her cup of tea. “Granted she scolded Yuki for trying to duck out of the wedding party early, but I heard it with my own ears, young man. I don’t know what you said to Shimo, but I think you managed to make an impression with her.”

It had been a few days since Yuki slipped me that note at the wedding reception, and I hadn’t seen her since, even though the Ryu requested I come over to help chop some firewood. The thing with Lady Hisui is that I wasn’t sure if that was a pretext to get Yuki and I to spend more time together or if she really needed firewood chopped.

It turned out she actually needed firewood to be chopped. According to Lady Hisui,

The actual wedding ceremony between Shimo and her fiancée Hiro took place in a shrine in the center of town and was limited to the immediate family of the bride and groom, but the guests would accompany Hiro, Shimo, Yuki, Lady Husui and Hiro’s parents to a spacious banquet hall that abutted a creek within easy walking distance from the shrine.
Shimo emerged from the temple in a red kimono and a red hood while Hiro was wearing immaculately polished ceremonial armored gauntlets and shoulder pads over a formal guard uniform as the gathered guests began applauding and throwing confetti and streamers. Yuki was next to her sister in a dark grey off-the-shoulder kimono top and pleated dress. She leaned in and said something to Shimo before her reserved and aloof big sister threw her arms around Yuki, giving her a big hug and beaming ear-to-ear. Lady Hisui then said something to the two of them before the bride and the Ryu embraced, making their way to the banquet hall. After scanning the crowd for a moment, Yuki spotted me and waved before began making her way over.

On the day of her sister’s wedding, the timid lamia appeared much more confident, assured and animated. I was pretty sure I made a number of the males in attendance jealous as Yukihebi made her way up to me before she reached out and clasped my hands.

After my fourth or fifth glass of sake at the tavern, I felt a slender pair of arms slide around my shoulders and the warm swell of a large pair of breasts pressing into my back. Right away I could tell the arms were too dark to belong to the cute shirohebi who had been occupying my mind lately. Yukihebi also didn’t have a colorful dragon tattoo wrapping around her upper arm, either.

“Hanta-kun….are you feeling OK? You haven’t tried fondling me all week.” a husky but still feminine voice asked loud enough for the other patrons to hear.

“Is that an invitation, Burei?” I ask.

Suddenly, the buxom human barmaid rediscovers her modesty and backs away from me as though I had just burst into flame. Burei was easily one of the longest-serving barmaids at this particular izakaya. While not as pretty as some of the newer hires, her brash, straightforward nature somehow endeared herself to alot of the regulars. Every once in awhile, drunkards needed to hear the hard truth, something the demure and prettier new hires were less than capable of.

“You’re awake.” I heard a voice call out.

The last thing I remember was traipsing around the woods, trying to cut a path through the forest and foothills that would circumvent the emperor’s Customs house for a Gyoubu Danuki client who was interested in smuggling in foreign contraband. She had given me an advance paid in gold the week before, but none of that mattered as I fell down an embankment and slammed my head against a rock on the way down.

I seemed to remember fleeting visions of a beautiful, pale angelic figure watching over me at times. But then again, I did fall from a considerable height and hit my head in the process, so that could also have been explained away as the byproduct of head trauma.
