A young scholar finds himself shanghaied by Imperial pirates, to be sold into slavery. To save himself, he decides to tell the story of Sinbad the Spacefarer, disgraced captain of the Orion Hierarchy, first human Crown Knight of the Empire. His seven voyages took him from the unknown birthplace of the Whale Clan, to the outer reaches of the Empire, to the deep unknown on the far side of the core, and other, stranger places. Sinbad’s story is a romance, of a man torn between his duty to his superiors, and the strange, lonely Imperials who he finds out among the stars. He struggles to give hope to his people, and the Empire, while forced to confront the fact that he’s a small fish in a great big ocean. In the meantime, the scholar desperately tries to find out why the captain of the pirates has such a deep grudge against humans.
