Riddles of love

Scott leaned his head against the steering wheel and turned off the car.

“Shitty day, shitty job”

he muttered to himself. The sun had just ducked below the horizon leaving little light as well as a beautiful pink sky accented with dark blue clouds that appeared painted in with long brush strokes. Scott stopped to admire it for a moment before heading up the walkway to his home. Stopping at the door he noticed the entryway lights were off.

“Maybe she went out?”

Scott twisted the handle and opened the door, revealing a darkened house. The curtains were drawn, blocking out what little light there was. Scott could barely make out his hand in front of his face.

“Alana? You home?”

Scott called out into the seemingly empty house. He slowly moved through the front hall and stopped when he heard giggling.

Scott called out again.

“What comes down but never goes up?”

The question came from the kitchen. Scott stopped for a moment then sighed.

“Do I have to?”

Silence… Scott thought for a moment then answered the riddle

Scott heard the clacking of claws on wood. Moving through the darkened kitchen, he smelled the familiar scents of coffee and age. He followed the sounds deeper into the house, stopping when he reached the dining room. He stood in the doorway and slowly scanned the room for any presence of his wife. A voice came from the Living room

“A thing so fragile, it can be broken by uttering its name”

Scott scratched his cheek then answered.

He heard footsteps leave the living room and head towards the basement steps. Passing through the living room Scott banged his shin on the coffee table

“Oww! Fuck! Do we have to do this?! I’ve had a really long day!”

Scott rubbed his leg then looked towards the basement steps. He saw a figure dash down them. Stopping at the top of the steps he heard another riddle come from the bottom.

“You will always find me in the past. I can be created in the present, But the future can never taint me.”

Scott bit his upper lip and thought for a bit.

A giggle came from the bottom of the steps. Scott slowly descended into darkest reach of his house.

“I have you now”

he thought to himself. Reaching the bottom of the steps he extended his arms and swiped at the darkness. A sound to his left, a sound to his right, the cause of which was always just out of his reach. He groped at nothing, a part of some bizarre dance in which he couldn’t even see his partner. Stopping to collect himself he felt a paw brush his cheek. It guided his gaze to the top of the steps. A moment later a figure appeared.

“What has a single eye but cannot see?”

Scott bit his lower lip and thought for a minute, they were getting harder.

“A needle”

the figure dashed off, Scott heard feet ascending the steps to the upstairs. Moving up the basement steps Scott couldn’t help but smile. She had an odd way of showing it but deep down in his heart he knew that Alana loved him. The lazy nights they spent together on the couch were always the best. Just her stretched out over him, purring softly into his chest as he rubbed her ears. He reached the foot of the steps, the riddle came from the top.

“You can see me in water but I never get wet. What am I?”

Scott rested his hand on the railing and rapped a simple pattern with his knuckles.

“A reflection”

there was a small scuff followed by the sound of a door shutting and locking. Scott ascended the steps and stopped in front of the bedroom door. He tried the handle, it wouldn’t budge. The riddle came from the other side of the door.

“Tool of thief, toy of queen. Always used to be unseen. Sign of joy, sign of sorrow. Giving all likeness borrowed.”

“oooh a rhyming one”

Scott put his back against the door and slowly slid down to the floor. He rested the back of his head against the door and shut his eyes. He went over the riddle slowly in his head, trying to pick out the smallest detail that might help him. Eventually he answered.

“…A mask?”

Silence… Then the sound of a lock clicking. Scott found himself flat on his back with his gaze pointed directly at his bedroom ceiling. Standing up, Scott looked over at the bathroom, there was a faint light coming from under the door. He made his way over to the door and rested his hand on the knob. He took a deep breath and opened the door. He was greeted by a freshly drawn bubble bath with rose petals and candles strewn about. Scott heard footsteps behind him. Before he could fully react he felt a pair of perky breasts press up against his back, a pair of paws wrapped themselves around his waist and a chin rested itself on his shoulder.

“Who has rich chocolaty hair, piercing green eyes and is the man I love?”

The voice was right next to his ear.

Alana planted a big wet kiss on Scott’s cheek and smiled.

“Welcome home my love.”

  1. “What comes down but never goes up?”

    Someone on ecstacy

“What has a single eye but cannot see?”

The alphabet (I’m kinda proud of myself with this one, even though the wordplay kinda falls apart when you think about it)

“You can see me in water but I never get wet. What am I?”

“Who has rich chocolaty hair, piercing green eyes and is the man I love?”

I wish you’d had him say “the milkman” or some equivalent.

Nonetheless I liked this, it was a fun scene

  2. Excellent banter between two lovers.

    Just a minor quibble-
(The question came from the kitchen. Scott stopped for a moment then sighed.

I think you meant- “Do I have to?”
